Boat Ramp and Observation Deck

5201-5307, County Rd 603, Exmore, VA 23350

On the seaside, just one mile east of Main Street in downtown Exmore, is the quiet hamlet of Willis Wharf with harbor facilities that include 51 boat slips, a free public boat ramp, free kayak launch, spacious grassy parking lot for cars and trailers, potable restrooms and a large observation deck looking out to the Barrier Islands.

The observation deck has a picnic table and telescope and is ideal for birdwatching or viewing celestial events, including any rockets launched by Wallops Island. Among birdwatchers, Willis Wharf is known for the whimbrels that transit through on their way to and from southern wintering spots. These shorebirds stop for several weeks during migrations in spring (April – May) and fall (July – September) to congregate on the extensive tidal flats.

The facilities at Willis Wharf are operated and maintained by Northampton County and are ADA compliant. The ambiance of Willis Wharf is very pleasant. This secluded waterfront area is an important aquaculture capital, raising clams and oysters here in our pristine waters for distribution nationwide.

The observation deck at Willis Wharf is a perfect place for viewing waterfowl or rocket launches. A picnic table and viewer overlooks the creek.
